Why HiiT?

When I talk about HiiT some people give me a slightly puzzled look thinking that I am talking about martial arts – something that I have zero experience in (however if you are interested, I can recommend Fitness, Fun and Health through martial arts at Actions Sports, Bull and Bush). No, when I refer to HiiT I am talking about High Intensity Interval Training rather than fisticuffs.

So, what is high intensity interval training? In HiiT you focus on short bursts of intense activity followed by an even shorter interval of rest. For example, in our classes we often do 20 seconds of an exercise followed by a 10 second rest period, we repeat this 8 times before having a 60 second rest and moving onto the next exercise cycle. We continue this for 30 minutes. This particular breakdown is known as Tabata training.

Below are some of the many benefits attributed to high intensity interval training from the amount of time it takes to its many health benefits.

Time – when you have a busy day fitting in an hour or so at the gym slogging it on the treadmill can be difficult to fit into your schedule. However, with HiiT, due to the high speed and intensity factor, you can gain the same results in a shorter amount of time. Studies have shown that 15 minutes of HiiT performed 3 times a week can reap greater rewards than someone jogging on the treadmill for an hour.

Fat burning – A HiiT workout is an efficient way to burn the highest number of calories. During the workout your body’s repair cycle operates in hyperdrive and your metabolism continues burning calories for up to 24 hours post workout.

Healthy heart – During HiiT you work your body into the anaerobic zone where your body’s demand for oxygen exceeds the oxygen available causing your muscles to form lactate. The short exertion and high power of this form of training is sustainable as you know the rest period is coming very soon.

Challenging – HiiT workouts are always changing, you can see results quickly as a beginner and you can keep challenging yourself to complete more repetitions in the designated interval, challenging yourself and pushing yourself to the limit.

Overall high intensity interval training helps build muscle and promotes power, strength and speed.  Our classes at The Honeycomb Hub give you a full body workout that improves core strength and muscular endurance while using an interval timer so that you push yourself to the max. During our HiiT Fit classes we utilise kettlebells, Bulgarian bags and slam balls combined with functional bodyweight exercises to get the most out of your workout. In our Bodyweight Fitness classes we often use the timer but lose the weights and focus on functional exercises that use only our bodyweight.

If you want to take your fitness and endurance to the next level book in to some of our classes and get your endorphins flowing. We know how challenging it can be fitting exercise in to your busy schedule, so for any classes that operate between 8am-5pm you may bring you children with you. Young ones can stay with you in their car seats or one of our baby bouncers, while older children can play in Tiny Town (P50 for 1.5hours) or in our free book nook. The studio conveniently has windows overlooking these play areas for peace of mind (however there will always be an adult keeping an eye on them during their playtime).

Understanding the benefits of exercise is important from an early age. In our activity / homework clubs we incorporate 15 minutes of HiiT for children at the beginning of each session and this week sees the start of our new Funky Fit classes at 4pm on a Tuesday. This class is suitable  children (age 5 upwards) and is excellent for parents to join in too! It consists of 20 minutes of HiiT followed by a bit of a boogie at the end!  P50 per person.
The first ever trial Funky Fit session with our wonderful volunteers!
